This course will provide a psychodynamic and developmental framework for the evaluation and provision of treatment interventions to the pre-school aged child. The course format will involve readings, lectures, discussions, and case examples. The course will focus on normal, age appropriate developmental capabilities of the pre-oedipal child. Students will learn to structure a psychodynamic interview so that a sound diagnostic assessment can be made using a developmental psychopathology model which will guide the therapeutic process. Common problems of pre-school aged children will be addressed when the pre-oedipal phase is not adequately negotiated. Various therapeutic strategies will be highlighted.
